The dreaming stage

This is an important stage I want to chronicle.... the dreaming and planning

So we dreamed for about a year and specifically planned starting in February. I, of course, had a pinterest board going and stalked certain blogs for kitchen tips. We have landed on the following choices (well there are tons more things... but these are the main ones):

-White shaker-style Ikea cabinets (Grimslov)
-Light stone colored 12 by 18 in floor tiles in a herringbone pattern (Lowes)
-laminate countertops (Lowes)
-Replacing a section of the wall cabinets with floating shelves
-Same wall color we currently have
-farmhouse sink (ikea)
-Light blue/ grey glass subway tile backsplash (from Home Depot)

We decided the Ikea route because I have heard great things about them. We live about 2 hours from the nearest Ikea store, but my parents like 30 minutes from it so I had my dad buy the smallest size door to bring us as a sample to make sure we liked the quality and it was super sturdy and very impressive. It is also less expensive because it is not fully wood and you have to completely assemble every piece.

They have a fairly decent program you can download to design the kitchen. It has some bugs and takes a while to move things around, but it give you a good idea and give you a full list of almost every item you need. I probably spent 10 hours overall designing it. Here's what we learned about ikea ordering:

Buy early during the sale. They usually have a spring sale and a fall sale that typically run for about 2 1/2 months. We tried to order online about 3 weeks prior to the end of the sale. We ran into a weird issue with their website in that it wouldn't let us progress to the page past typing in your home address for delivery to the page where you actually order everything. Very frustrating. So later that week we called to order by phone. A very nice man helped me- but then our credit card didn't have a high enough daily purchasing amount so it was denied. So a few days later we changed the daily purchase limit and reordered. Well by that time- not all our pieces were in stock in their main wear house so we have several things currently on backorder.... like the kitchen sink. I am slightly worried about that one.

We finally ordered April 20th and it was delivered on May 4th. It took them about 30 minutes to put it in the house and it looked like this when it came...

I settled on laminate countertops because they are easy to clean, cheaper, and they now make VERY nice looking laminate that I have mistaken for granite before. We seriously considered butcher block- but our kitchen gets some intense use and I didn't want to be paranoid when we had people over about doing all the dishes right away and making sure people didn't leave out wet glasses to cause a water ring. We are going for use-friendly here people.
